Now Syphilization are a quirky prog metal outfit from Brisbane. They play a mixture of technically-demanding prog, visceral death metal, laid-back jazz and a wealth of other genres mixed into a strangely accessible and satisfying fusion with a sense of humour and a little absurdity. They have been described as "amazing", "ridiculously talented" and "highly entertaining" by their parents.
ThenThe roots of Syphilization began when Azam, a metalhead drummer, and Aidan, a Mike Patton-worshipping bass player, met at QUT. Azam was invited to jam with Aidan and his younger brother Julian, who played guitar and was nurturing a love of technical death metal. Shortly afterwards, Jesse, a screeching metal guitarist met Aidan and Azam in the computer labs while working on an assignment. He was invited to come over and jam with the other two. He was later discovered to be a mediocre guitarist and so endeavoured to learn the keyboard, a feat to which he still aspires. Following the short-lived tenure of a second guitarist, and a repeat-effort with another guitarist-singer, the band tirelessly sought a voice that would match their musical style. This pursuit proved too Herculian, so it was broadened to a search for a voice that could sing in tune and wasn't disgusted by the sight of the other members; a nonetheless highly optimistic quest.
